LEDGE LOVE

Hello dear friends,

I know it has been a while since my last post in this blog, but life got in the way :)

Remember my roommate dilema a few months back? Well, I finally made up my mind to be roommate free and coincidentally the very same day, my roommate also sent me her moving out notice! YAY!!

So, now that I have the entire apartment to myself, I have be doing a number of small home improvement/renovation projects to imbibe into the space a little more of ma personality!

I have always been in love with the idea of a picture ledge and after looking at a number of ledge inspirations on internet, I finally decided that the ledge had to be my first major room renovation.

So off I went to the trustee Ikea to find myself a ledge and to my delight, found a perfect one that I was looking for. (Ok, not so perfect as I would have preferred them to be longer. I had to use two ledges to make them span across my sofa, and lining them up was a major pain for a novice handy man like myself!)

And ofcourse like everything else in life, here too we had to face some roadblocks and conquer them to sweet victory.

  • First step of putting up the ledge involved scanning the wall for beams to avoid drilling into them; and to ofcourse the beams had to line up exactly where the holes in the ledge were! But so determined were we to get the ledge up that we started drilling new holes in the ledge itself. It did damage the ledge a bit, but nothing that a picture frame cannot coverup :)

  • Second step ofcourse was drilling holes into the wall and while the ledge looked straight when marking the holes by eyeballing for straigtness, once the ledge was up, to our dismay, we relized that the second ledge did not line up with the first one. New holes had to be drilled on the wall again, but this time we were smarter and instead of eyeballing we used the Buuble Level app on our phone and the result was a beautiful straight ledge!

After a good 2 hours work, I must admit that I am very happy with the ledge and the couch is now my favorite spot in the apartment! It is by no means a perfect handy work but it works for my needs.

Here is the final result:

Let me know what you guys think!

P.S: Did you guys know about the Post-it not trick for drill shaving catchers? It's brilliant!!

Paste a folded post-it note below the spot where you are planning to drill and the post-it will catch all the drill shavings.

Unit next time,
